Plique-a-Jour: Enameling Without a Net with Amy Roper Lyons

Plique-a-jour is one of the most exciting and luminous of enameling techniques.  This class will break it down into a clear step-by-step method, revealing tips and tricks that demystify this beautiful art. Using fine silver wire and eutectic solder, students will fabricate a 3 dimensional framework.  The enamels will then be suspended in the openings of the filigree, and fired without a backing, the physics of surface tension holding the molten glass in place. Amy learned directly from the legendary Master Valeri Timofeev, you have an opportunity to have his secrets passed along to you!

The class will cover the fabrication of the framework, the application of the enamel, special procedures for successful firing, and methods for finishing the work.  Students will complete a small bowl project.  Beginners will gain an introduction to an exciting medium, and more experienced students will deepen their understanding of this fascinating technique.

Metal working skills will be very helpful but are not mandatory!

(The Nearest airport is San Jose although San Francisco Airport is not much further if your connections are better there. There are motels in the Watsonville area but many students enjoy the AirBNB option here)
